KGNU Presents: Mariachi El Bronx w/Two Gallants
Fox Theatre
"Going acoustic and dressing in black charro outfits is probably the punkest move they could have taken; El Bronx negotiate in exactly the same way as The Bronx they don't. They fear nothing, explore everything and create from the rawest of emotion, making imperfections the very best bits.NME
Punk rock. Mariachi. Two great tastes that go great together er, right? Well, anyway, the two joined regardless one fateful August day in 2006, when The Bronx showed up to play on a television show. At the time, the Los Angeles-based punks were infamous for scabrous rifferama that suggested a return to L.A.s golden age of hardcore (its not coincidence that the band portrayed Black Flag in the Darby Crash biopic What We Do Is Secret, or went on their first tour with the Circle Jerks). The show requested the band play an acoustic version of Dirty Leaves off the bands second, self-titled album a request that didn't sit well. Going unplugged was a 90s fad that I had a knee-jerk reaction to dislike, notes guitarist Joby J. Ford. We wanted to do something a little bit different. Indeed, The Bronx took it one irreverent step further, donning uncharacteristic sombreros and arranging the song as a mariachi lament. We never wanted The Bronx to be a soft, quiet band, says frontman Matt Caughthran, but this freed up a whole new realm. Sometimes you don't realize the barriers around yourself until you step outside them. It was a big moment in our career, breathing new life into the band.
Says Caughthran, the greatest thing about our band, and the most torturous, is that its unpredictable for us too! We don't know where the chaos will take us, but that's a good thing its always exciting. Honesty, heart and the will to do things no one else is doing remain the driving force: I'm not saying were the best band on the planet, but were pretty good. When we put the charro suits on, we feel invincible.

KGNU Presents: Trampled By Turtles
Boulder Theater
Trampled by Turtles is Dave Simonett, Tim Saxhaug (bass, vocals), Dave Carroll (banjo, vocals), Erik Berry and Ryan Young (fiddle). Within the contained music scene of Duluth, the members of the band did their own time in punk and rock bands, brandishing their electricity proudly before switching to acoustic instruments. While they never set out to be a bluegrass band, Trampled by Turtles employs many of the same traditional techniques of the genre, but their differences in influences, attitude and attack make for their unique sound. The group is most famous for its high-tempo, fast-paced, intelligent songs but also features lead vocalist Dave Simonett's lyric writing abilities in slower ballads. Their high-energy concerts have attracted an ever-growing, dedicated fan following. doors 8pm / show 9pm 16+

KGNU Presents: Tom Hagerman (of Devotchka)
Larimer Lounge
Tom Hagerman is best known for his multi-instrumentalist role in the genre-defying band DeVotchKa, and for performing on recordings by M Ward, Crooked Fingers, She and Him, Micah P. Hinson, Bettye Lavette, Mercury Rev, Amos Lee and Sage Francis, among others. In the world of film, Tom provided score contributions both with DeVotchKa in "Little Miss Sunshine" and more recently on Calexico's score for "The Guard" and Zooey Deschanel's songs in "Winnie the Pooh."
Tom started playing music at age 7. He stumbled his way through his teenage years playing in various public school orchestras and regional youth symphonies before winding up in Boulder to study violin at the University of Colorado. During his time at the University, he found himself playing bass guitar in a goth band while landing himself a 10 week summer stint in an orchestra at the decidedly un-goth Disney World in Florida. "I can vividly recall playing in the orchestra accompanying Toni Tennille on her hit song "Love Will Keep us Together" all the while hearing Joy Division's "Love will Tear Us Apart" in my head. Excluding a year as a bike messenger in New York City, Tom Hagerman has been a member of DeVotchKa since 1997 and also a member of the currently slumbering seminal Denver band, the Denver.

Reggae masters The Aggrolites are back! Aggrolites do it once again with their latest release "Rugged Road". Taking you back to the early days of Dirty Reggae, the aggro boys are once again proving that they know their reggae! Songs that will take you back to the days of Boris Gardiner and early Skinhead Reggae. Tunes that will remind you of Junior Murvin and the touch of Lee Perry.

KGNU Presents: Horse Feathers w/The Barr Brothers
Bluebird Theatre
New Year's Eve always suggests a new beginning, and "Cynics New Year" welcomes Horse Feathers' fans with the promise of something new. To be sure, old friends return. Wrapped around Justin Ringle's unique vocals are sparkling guitars, dancing fiddles, and smoky banjo woven through the foundation of the lower strings. But new elements are everywhere: horn, woodwind and brass appear and fade, and drums drive the beat in places, providing new texture and heft. The lyrics traverse familiar themes from natural disaster to the deeply personal, each through Justin Ringle's uniquely American linguistic lens. New vistas and new stories are explored with deep insight and fresh intimacy, always with an abiding respect and affection. The universe rises to threaten, inspire, and sometimes punish, but always to teach a valuable lesson. Souls, lost and found, embark on thoughtful emotional journeys.
The first single, Fit against the Country, describes a nation where working men and women shoulder their careworn lives with neither apology nor surrender. These are words that need to be held close, owing their poignance as much to the savor of their pure sound as to their meaning. Where Ill Be, another single from this brilliant collection, has an infectious rhythmic cadence that marks it as one of the great songs evoking trains, with a compelling sentiment that belies the gray landscape it travels.
Again joining Justin is instrumental co-conspirator Nathan Crockett, accompanied by a gathering of gifted Northwest musicians.
"Cynics New Year" does not fail to deliver something beautiful and new. It navigates a thoughtful, thought-provoking expedition from the wide sky and rolling ocean to the most private corners of the human heart.

KGNU Presents: Blitzen Trapper
Bluebird Theatre
Blitzen Trapper is a five-member indie rock band from Portland, Oregon. They are touring in support of their latest release, American Goldwing, which, band member and songwriter Eric Early describes as "entering into the sounds we grew up with, the hard guitar rock and country picking of our younger years mixes with glimmers of our usual space-aging technology and pawn shop Casio aplomb. Heavy guitar riffs and blasting drum fills live side-by-side with plucking banjos and wailing harmonicas, and muddy slide guitars that make you want to shotgun a beer in the shower while listening to the Stones or Joe Walsh. Its also our first foray into direct, outside influence in the creation of a record. It's me letting go in a certain way. I let Tchad Blake come in to mix this album, and my good friend Gregg Williams co-produced all these tracks."
